By using satire to infiltrate the minds that would not be receptive to direct anti-war messages, we allow the anti-war messages to form in the readers’ own heads. We allow people to see past what the media and authority figures have trained them to believe and instead think for themselves in their own self-interest. These seditious thoughts that break the myth of glory, and prevent unnecessary sacrifice are of great value if we are to have a society comprised of critical thinkers. Such a society is necessary if the poor are to overcome the effects of media and politicians made up of and owned by the wealthy. The words manifested in my body, and remain there today. I can’t look at it without a wave of nausea and fascination crashing over me. Great literature forces the reader to identify with the characters. I think we’ve all had a situation in which we have identified with the protagonist of this story and had experiences with people exemplified by the other characters in this book. My experience of Lolita is intrinsically connected to the discussions I had with my brother. Lolita inspired in me a fervent hunger for discussion of truth. I shared my writing at open mics, with friends, and I cried every time. I embraced the pain, the hurt, and eventually, it became the norm. My teachers didn’t quite know what to do with me, so, no longer confined to a classroom if I didn’t want to be, I was in limbo. I began wandering around campus with no company except my thoughts. Occasionally, Zora, my English teacher’s dog, would tag along and we’d walk for miles in each other's silent company. Other times, I found myself pruning the orchard, feeding the school’s wood furnaces, or my new favorite activity, splitting wood. Throughout those days, I created a new-found sense of home in my head. Thanks to my positivity, I was chosen to give the morning announcements freshman year. Now, I am the alarm clock for the 1,428 students of Fox Lane High School. For the past three years, I have been starting everyone’s morning with a bubbly, “Good morning, foxes! Then, in high school, I developed an enthusiasm for Chinese. As I studied Chinese at my school, I marveled how if just one stroke was missing from a character, the meaning is lost. I loved how long words were formed by combining simpler characters, so HuÇ' (火) meaning fire and Shān (å±±) meaning mountain can be joined to create HuÇ'shān (火山), which means volcano. I love spending hours at a time practicing the characters and I can feel the beauty and rhythm as I form them. I learned about the different mechanisms and cells that our bodies use in order to fight off pathogens. My desire to major in biology in college has been stimulated by my fascination with the human body, its processes, and the desire to find a way to help people with allergies. I want to study foreign language and linguistics in college because, in short, it is something that I know I will use and develop for the rest of my life. Most of my time is spent rescuing animals from small children and, in turn, keeping small children from drowning in the tanks. I’ll never forget the time when a visiting family and I were so involved in discussing ocean conservation that, before I knew it, an hour had passed. Finding this mutual connection over the love of marine life and the desire to conserve the ocean environment keeps me returning each summer. I am on Oxford Academy’s Speech and Debate Team, in both the Parliamentary Debate division and the Lincoln-Douglass debate division. After I finished the exchange student program, I had the option of returning to Korea but I decided to stay in America. I wanted to see new places and meet different people. Since I wasn’t an exchange student anymore, I had the freedom--and burden--of finding a new school and host family on my own. The worst thing you can do is write an essayâ€"on whatever topicâ€" that is generic, an essay where if your name was replaced by another, the reader could not tell the difference. The essay is an opportunity to share a piece of yourself, to give them a better reason why the school should choose you over the many others who are no less qualified and also seek the spot. Help them understand why you should be a part of their community. Of course you can find samples of admissions essays online but be aware that if you can find them, so can everyone else. It’s a lot of work for you to write, it’s a lot of work for them to read and evaluate, but it really is for your own good. Such an essay is intended to leave a positive imprint in the admissions officer’s mind and make them feel excited about you as a person. You can also ask someone else to proofread your essay for you. Asking a teacher, parent, or older sibling is probably the best way to go, since they might be more familiar with what's expected from college admissions essays. Just get startedâ€"the hardest part is the first part. Starting early is key to writing a college essay, so you should get started the summer before your senior year. If you can get your essay finished during this summer, you’ll have plenty of time to adjust it or rewrite it, as well as to get started on other essays, as well. Plus you’ll be in a position to apply for early decision deadlines by the winter, which is always a good idea. More than that, college admission essays and personal statements give you the chance to tell your story.

For example, if you are writing an essay on childhood development and exposure to technology, you will want to look into the physical, psychological and cognitive developmental effects of tech on kids. When you research this topic, you will find that there are contrasting points of view and researchers have identified several physical, developmental, and psychological effects of technology use in children. In its simplest form, an essay can consist of three paragraphs with one paragraph being devoted to each section. Proponents of the five paragraph essay say that the body text should consist of three paragraphs, but in reality, it’s fine to write more or fewer paragraphs in this section. Science in all its forms fascinated me, but science projects in particular were a category all to themselves. With this in mind, you should replace lower-level words with higher-level words . You might consider looking up SAT/ACT vocabulary words and working a handful of those into your essay. When seniors began to ask me for advice and teachers recruited me to teach underclassmen, I discovered not only that I had been heard, but that others wanted to listen. At heart, I am still reserved , but in finding my voice, I found a strength I could only dream of when I stood in silence so many years ago. I joined no clubs in primary school, instead preferring isolation. It took six years of tongue twisters and complicated mouth contortions in special education classes for me to produce the forty-four sounds of the English language. Whatever you feel you can contribute, add that to your list of essay goals. Again, remember that you are more than just an international student. You have so much more to contribute to the campus social and learning environment than just your home culture. Take a few moments to consider what else you may contribute. Due to the University of Rochester’s reputation for an extensive use of statistics in political science research, I would make a good addition to your fall class. While attending the University of Rochester, I would like to study international relations or comparative politics while in graduate school. I find the research of Dr.’s Hein Goemans and Gretchen Helmke intriguing and would like the opportunity to learn more about it through the Graduate Visitation program. In college, as I became more politically engaged, my interest began to gravitate more towards political science.

The Admission Essay

The Admission Essay I have learned, though, that suppressing my emotional side during a time of disagreement and instead responding with calmness gets my point across more effectively. When that irritation begins to overtake my ability to concentrate on another person’s outlook, I always try to draw from my experiences of living both in the South and in the West. They are surrounded by different cultures and experiences. I don’t necessarily have to find validity in everyone’s viewpoints to at least listen to their reasoning. Assimilating into American culture and the American way of life was no easy feat for me and I struggled at first, but I found ways to manage. Although my parents were not fluent in English, I was able to learn English with the help of Dora the Explorer, Barney, and my surroundings. Little by little, American culture poured into my life, intermingling with my Guatemalan roots. I strive to continue improving my ability to be comfortable with disagreement in order to learn more from my peers. I may not always send up agreeing with Emily, or other people I care about, but I should at least try to understand a different perspective. Only then can I create a bridge that connects two different ideas, allowing for a more harmonious world. So, I try to listen with an open mind, even when that feels extremely difficult. Sometimes, pure adrenaline rushes through my body, making me want to bang my hands on the table out of complete anger towards an opinion. Learn how important this word limit is and how to make the most of your 650 words. You can also try using some checklist that can help you correct all weak points of your essay. Those tips seem to b to simple, but if you follow them carefully it will work anyway. Sign up to receive emails for events, news, info sessions, and other admission related information. Finally, I extend my hesitant arm to pick up the pack of masa harina and proceed to pour it into the bowl. As I pour the masa harina, I cannot help but think about how much it resembles my journey to America. When I moved, I brought my Guatemalan heritage with me into the massive bowl that is the United States. Continuing with the recipe, I gradually add water to the masa harina and knead it until it becomes the desired texture. “These people are just confused,” Emily whispered to me as she stared out the car window at the gay couples walking down the rainbow streets of the Castro. I was utterly offended by her statement, but I replied calmly, “Let people be who they are.” Emily and I grew up in Texas together as inseparable friends. For twelve years that was our beautiful home, and we enjoyed every moment together. Last summer, Emily visited my new home of five years, San Francisco, for the first time. I adore the end of a cross country race when all the girls from different schools hug and laugh with one another. I cherish being on a soccer team, where the bond between my teammates and me is essential for achieving success. Appreciating uniqueness and connecting to different characters augments my own maturity and depth. Despite our differences, Emily and I have a healthy relationship in which we are able to learn from one another; the acknowledgement of our individual value allows us to avoid bitterness. The more I remain nonjudgmental, the more my own beliefs develop and become nuanced. I extract small pieces of their perspectives in order to enhance my own. If I completely disagree with their opinions, I use their counterargument to articulate a more potent version of my position. The value in telling my story is just as important as hearing another. I love group projects in school, where ideas and creativity flow between people.

10 College Application Essay Dos And Donts

10 College Application Essay Dos And Don'ts Like a game of chess, I lay out an intricate plan of attack. If I am completely perplexed by a wall, I converse with other pro climbers to guide me towards the best route. Every time I interact with climbers better than myself, I learn a new technique and create new bonds. Being part of the rock climbing community has helped me develop my social skills. I don’t have an answer to what exactly it is I want to do for the rest of my life. I love English and political science, but I have yet to find such an all-encompassing response as potatoes. For better or for worse, I decided to finally make my voice heard. I was born with a speech impediment that weakened my mouth muscles. I tried my best to blend in and give the impression I was silent by choice. What I’ve realized though, is that I don’t have to sacrifice all for one. From each of my interests I learn things that contribute to who I am and shape how I see the world. Scanning the school club packet, I searched for my place. But then, I sat in on a debate team practice and was instantly hooked. I was captivated by how confidently the debaters spoke and how easily they commanded attention. I was sick of how confining my quiet nature had become. And when I do have an answer, I will go forth with the knowledge I’ve gathered from each of my varied interests; and I will never stop learning. And when asked what to eat exclusively for the rest of my life, I will enthusiastically respond “potatoes! Day by day, I began to stand a little taller and talk a little louder both inside and outside of debate. In a few months, my blood no longer froze when I was called on in class. A narrowly focused essay will be much more effective than a general, vague one. Whatever you feel you can contribute, add that to your list of essay goals. Again, remember that you are more than just an international student. You have so much more to contribute to the campus social and learning environment than just your home culture. Take a few moments to consider what else you may contribute. Your answer to these questions will help you frame the content of your essay. I found I could finally look other people in the eyes when I talked to them without feeling embarrassed. My posture straightened and I stopped fidgeting around strangers. I began to voice my opinions as opposed to keeping my ideas to myself. As my debate rank increased from the triple to single-digits, so too did my standing at school. I began interacting with my teachers more and leading my peers in clubs. I joined no clubs in primary school, instead preferring isolation. It took six years of tongue twisters and complicated mouth contortions in special education classes for me to produce the forty-four sounds of the English language.

Writing An Introduction

Writing An Introduction Your essay should show something that is unique; a demonstration of a distinctive quality that no other student may choose to offer. These three facts give us the first clues as to what should be included in your essay. Universities are not just looking for students that hope to acquire good skills; they are looking for those who have a promising future. Your future success makes them look good and encourages more students to want to study with them. Your essay should reflect a powerful sense of commitment to your goals and your future success. I don’t understand why I’m being punished for being honest. Is this really something that’s worth complaining about? The important issue is to write the best essay you can, not the length of words. If you’re focus in only on the words and not what you’ve written, your writing is never going to be good. This is the same approach you need to use in your essay. Line up your scenes in chronological order so that the story is easy to follow. Their goal is to pull together a certain mix of people. They don’t want a collection of copycats all doing the same thing in their respective high schools. Believe it or not, the brainstorming stage may be more tedious than writing the actual application essay. The purpose is to flesh out all of your possible ideas so when you begin writing, you know and understand where you're going with the topic. The most common format required for essays is double-spaced, font type Times New Roman, and font size 12pt. With that in mind,1,000 typed words is about four pages. The average person types40 words per minute, so it would take about 30 minutes to finish 1,000 words of writing. Put some virtual blinders on and write your little heart out. Correcting an existing essay is MUCH easier than writing a perfect essay from the gecko. As a humanities student, I know what it’s like to struggle with the daunting task of writing a 500-word essay. You don’t know where to start, your thesis is nonexistent, you’re dreading the inevitable late-night ahead, and you’re struggling just to turn thoughts into words. My teacher told me that I needed to write an essay that had 2500 words. I got marks off for not writing an essay with exactly 2500 words. That’s completely ridiculous but my teacher refuse to reinstate the point she took off because she said 2500 words and not 2498 words. I could’ve just said that my was 2500 words and she would’ve never known the difference. Now forget all that, because a successful college application essay is totally different. Sample essay 2 with admissions feedback This is the currently selected item. The essays can be the most important components of your application. To take easy reading to the next level, try using sub-headers every paragraph to three paragraphs. This is applicable to blogs and web pages, and to a certain extent, in academic writing. I look at the header, and then I scan the sub-heads to get an idea of the writer’s approach to the subject. If it looks like fluff, I kill the page and move on. But if the sub-headers are interesting, and seem to tell me there’s something worth learning, I’ll read the whole piece. Have another person (or several!) read your essay, whether it’s a teacher, guidance counselor, parent, or trusted friend. You know what you meant to say, but is it clear to someone else reading your work? Have these people review your application essay to make sure your message is on target and clear to any audience. Start with your main idea and follow it from beginning to end. As you go through your revision keep these basic guidelines in mind. It’s time for you to narrow down your options for an essay topic and begin to build your story. At this point you already have all the information you need to create a powerful essay but now you need to start building it. Remember, that every story has a main plot, a few characters that the reader can connect with, and a slow build up to the climax.

Important Things To Learn About College Admission Essay Examples

Important Things To Learn About College Admission Essay Examples If your examples have nothing common with the topic then all the paper may go to trash and the admission will be unlikely. In first sentences students have to introduce themselves or the topic they want to dwell on. That’s why it is important to pick out a proper topic and take time to think of the structure and the essence of the essay. But don’t forget that admission essay is totally about you as a person. Admission essays are written for a certain purpose. Depart from the sample essay for college admission whenever you feel that it would improve your essay. You won't score extra point with the admissions department for finishing your essay in an hour. Unless you've helped write the State of the Union, your admissions essay will likely be the most influential essay you've written so far, at least as it relates to your own life. Give yourself at least a week to compose your essay. Make sure you look through all of the prompts for the university you are applying to and contemplate each of them. Prove that your thoughts are important and add relevant facts from your life, for instance personal challenges, lessons, fails, history of success. But be attentive to add only appropriate information. After you are done, read through it while noting the mistakes. From a narrative perspective, consider using this experience as a jumping-off point for a bigger lesson about life or education, and then return to this experience towards the end of your essay. The purpose is for the Admission Board to have a proper understanding of the personalities, goals and inspirations of the students they select to enrich their student body. They need to know what type of person you are and whether you are suitable for their organization. Grades and other attributes are of course, given preference, but a well written essay can tip the scales in your favour regardless of whether the student has low grades. Having a few extra pairs of eyes to read your essay is one of the best forms of college admission essay help. Ask your proofreaders to specifically look for grammar and spelling errors. If you feel yourself drawn to a particular prompt, think about why you're being drawn to it. Reflect on your life to find any personal anecdotes that work well with that prompt. This narrative structure presents an excellent way to frame a story and is common in many successful admissions essays. The gates of academia will open much easier with a strong college or university admissions essay. This is the greatest part that requires a lot of time and effort. Student should relate the topic to the body text to make it complete, coherent and worth to read. The template is there as an aid to your creativity, not a restriction. Use the sample college admission essay template as a scaffolding to build the rest of your essay around, rather than a fence to keep your thoughts contained. College admissions officers see hundreds of essays every year, and you do yourself no favors if you adhere slavishly to a template that the officers have seen before. Take your time, don’t rush as this will become the foundation of your essay. Take a notebook and write down whatever comes to your mind that would fit with that particular prompt. Make sure you include personal experiences with each one. Your assistants can also make suggestions on the content, such as identifying areas that need more detail or pointing out where you've written too much. Parents and teachers are good candidates for this task, but you can also make use of a college consultant for an experienced proofreader with specialized knowledge of the admissions process. Your college essay should reflect your authentic speaking voice, but that doesn't mean that you can write it like a lengthy text message. There's simply no excuse for any major grammatical or spelling errors on your essay. After you've completed your essay, go over it with a fine-toothed comb to look for any technical errors. A second pair of eyes can be essential; sometimes, writers are blind to their own mistakes. If you and your helper can't agree on the proper grammar for a particular phrase, rewrite the phrase to avoid the thorny issue. Also take the time to read your essay aloud; certain phrases may sound fine in your head, but hearing them spoken can highlight awkward phrasing or unclear wording. Most likely, the university gave you a prompt or a choice of prompts to write about.

Freshman Admissions > Essay Prompts

Freshman Admissions > Essay Prompts Tell the admissions officer something they can't learn about you from the other paperwork you've filled out. It's okay to expand on points you only mentioned in passing in other parts of the application, but make sure you are adding new information and presenting it in an engaging, creative way. Don’t be overly influenced by others’ ideas or essays other people have written. Don’t let anyone else write any part of your essay. DON’T tell the reader what they already know about you. Instead, tell them what they should know about you. Before you start writing, DO look at what the question is asking for and prepare yourself to respond appropriately. When you are thinking about your answer, ask yourself repeatedly if you are answering what the question is asking for. Nobody is going to learn anything of value from you if you fill your essay with complaints, excuses and self-loathing. Do provide new information that is not on your application. Do understand the mission of the school and how you will fit in. For example, maybe you're a creative thinker, or a great problem-solver. Emphasize this in your essay by writing about a time that those qualities helped you in your day-to-day life. Your admission essay lets you personalize your application. You have no way of knowing what the admissions officer's sense of humor is like, and you don't want to run the risk of a joke falling flat or, even worse, offending someone. Once you've brainstormed a list of ideas, choose one as the theme of your essay. Focusing on one theme helps keep your essay organized and to the point. Like any essay, the college admissions essay should have a clear thesis that summarizes your main ideas and presents your theme in an engaging way. Your essay also shouldn't just repeat things that you've already listed elsewhere on your application. The writing sample you submit will be considered in both the admission and competitive scholarship selection process. Be sure to include your full name on each page of your submission. Do tell a story in an interesting and engaging way. Don’t just relay the facts, but pretend you are sitting in a coffee shop talking to a friend. Do not embellish your essay or have someone else write it for you. Do not go over the word count â€" make it concise and smart. Take the time to make sure your essay is something you’re proud of. Do let your unique voice and personality come through in your writing. Do have a teacher, counselor, parent or friend with strong writing skills proofread your essay. Do write as many drafts of your essay as it takes to make it shine brightly. Don’t wait until the last minute to start writing. One thing you absolutely should DO is read your essay out loud to yourself. To see if your voice and your personality are really on that piece of paper. Are you in that essay or does it just sound like it could be anyone else? When you read it yourself and actually hear your words, you are more inclined to identify areas where your writing doesn’t flow well or where you start to stray from your message. Don’t repeat what is found elsewhere in your application, unless you’re adding pertinent information to round it out. Do write in your own style and using your own words.

Writing Tips For A College Admission Essay

Writing Tips For A College Admission Essay This short story is about a hunter, Qfwfq, who has just fired an arrow at a lion. The lion leaps at the hunter, and in that second the hunter can’t tell if the arrow will miss or not. He has a 50/50 chance of killing the lion or being killed by the lion. The hunter then considers the possibility of remaining frozen in time in this moment of uncertainty forever, where every possible outcome could still happen, but hasn’t happened yet. A roommate is across from me reading the same book, and every couple minutes we stop to comment. I stayed up late the night before reading a different book, and though we have only just started reading this one, we are both hooked. Every part of the model and curriculum at St. John’s encourages an honest pursuit of truth, but the classroom discussions most of all. The liturgy of every class-- beginning with a single question and every individual being addressed as Mr. or Ms.-- reflects a zealous love of truth. In the classroom, ideas and individuals are honored accordingly. For example, he takes the reader through the creation of the universe, mitosis and meiosis, theories about space and time, dinosaurs, the moon, and many more. The complex tapestries he weaves are hauntingly beautiful, sharing only a common narrator, the ageless Qfwfq, who relays each story as though having witnessed it. The hunter spends the rest of the story thinking through all the possible ramifications that come with choosing to exist only within a single second. He refers to this moment as “t zero,” where t is time, and the moment he is experiencing is point zero. Astoundingly, Johnnies spend every class with individuals who probably have entirely different career goals. In their honest pursuit of truth, they recognize that preparing for a career and to be fully human should be one and the same. Furthermore, they know this largely happens in discussions about Great Books around small tables. Having tasted this kind of discussion in high school, I will seek it out the rest of my life. This perspective is increasingly, and tragically, rare in a world obsessed with information and afraid of questions. Intellectual complacency even pervades higher education where students are more concerned with marketing themselves and acquiring credentials than pursuing truth and acquiring wisdom. This is my favorite quotation from my favorite book, The Underdogs by Mariano Azuela. I read this book for the first time in eighth grade while exploring the causes and consequences of the Mexican revolution. I am not simply interested in St. John’s; I am mesmerized by it. The thought of reading forty books in class over the school year excites me. The image of being surrounded by people similar to me thrills me. The knowledge that this may be in my future invigorates me. There is not one book on its own that calls to me, but knowing they are on my horizon fills me with anticipation. I can see me, a year older, sitting inside, curled up around a book and blanket. The sun has set early, so a lamp is on, shining warm light onto the pages. Beliefs are too often determined by trends and political bias, because in the social media age, how we are perceived matters more to us than what we actually think. I want to go to St. John’s because the whole methodology is in such a way that I can begin to love math. Every tutorial and seminar is taught with this same level of depth and understanding. Although staying at t zero is appealing, upon the end of the story the hunter must inevitably move through time into the next second where his fate will be decided. When my mom handed me Cosmicomicsin New York and said that I might like it, I was pretty skeptical. I am reluctant to fall in love with book someone recommends. But once I started it, I realized that I couldn’t help falling for it. Each one starts with a quote, which Calvino uses to explain and explore complex scientific theories.

Crafting An Unforgettable College Essay

Crafting An Unforgettable College Essay They know how unique and spectacular you are, and they can help you decide how to articulate it. Keep in mind, however, that a 45-year-old lawyer writes quite differently from an 18-year-old student, so if your dad ends up writing the bulk of your essay, we’re probably going to notice. This topic is too broad and too loaded, whether you want to write about God, your mom or best friend. Now that I've pontificated about the value of humor in essays, let me illustrate -- once again, because it's one of my favorites from over the decades -- using a real-life example. Years ago, I worked with an amazing young man who came from a difficult upbringing. The only items ranking higher in importance were grades, GPA, curriculum and test scores. Recommendations, extracurricular activities, class rank and interviews all fell further down the list of items…AFTER the essay. Unfortunately, this also leads to the danger of getting off topic. You probably already know not to use clichés in your college admission essay, but it’s important to realize that we sometimes slip into clichés in our writing without even realizing it. Also, by clichés I mean not only clichéd phrases, but also clichéd topics. Being too obviously aggressive in your essay can backfire. “In a world”, or, “Once upon a time”, are not good openers. Try your best to get the attention of the reader right off the bat. Admissions offices may be quick to stop paying attention if the essay is boring. Take the bold move and write something interesting. Your essay helps us learn what makes you unique from other equally talented students. The essay should not be the most dreaded part of the application process for any university. While you should definitely convey your enthusiasm, you don’t want the admissions committee to read the subtext of your essay as a really basic sales pitch. You want your essay to stand out for other reasons than its bare-faced “ADMIT ME!!!! ” attitude, but your essay has to actually interest and engage the admissions committee to make them want to admit you. There are some mistakes that consistently show up in college admission essays that should be avoided at all costs. Your parents, friends, guidance counselors, coaches, and teachers are great people to bounce ideas off of for your essay. Initial residency classification is determined by the Office of Admissions after applicants have been admitted to the university. All applicants are considered non-Florida residents until they provide proof otherwise. Failure to provide all relevant information and required documentation in a timely manner could result in a non-Florida resident classification for tuition purposes. An online Florida Residency Declaration For Tuition Purposes form is available to provide the necessary documentation as described below. All admitted students will be sent this online link. Test scores posted on official high school transcripts may also be accepted. Granted, there are times when a serious tone is appropriate for your essays. In fact, trying to make light of a serious topic can sometimes backfire. In consideration of the priority admissions deadlines, applicants who submit test scores after February are not guaranteed admission and may have to defer their applications to a future term. Whereas other students will rely on parents, teachers or counsellors for free advice as hundreds of thousands nationwide race to meet a key deadline for college applications. UF will receive more than 30,000 applications for the approximate 6,500 seats in the freshman class. There will be many outstanding students with similar scores and gradesâ€"too many to admit. Maybe these tips will help you find that you can do this writing task with ease. Editing college admission essays is obviously a must and seems like a “duh” tip, but it is definitely one worth repeating. Your college admission essay is very important, so you don’t want to let any typos slip through. When your creativity is sparked and your writing for a college admission essay seems to simply flow out of you, it’s a great feeling .

Interpersonal Communication Communication, And Chapter 9...

The workplace experience that I am going to share with the class gives the perfect example of lacking interpersonal communication in the work environment. This particular experience identifies how interpersonal communication is an essential skill that everyone working in a professional atmosphere should possess. The significance and relevance of my experience seems to be the most suitable and effective in relation to the theoretical concepts learned from chapter 8: Interpersonal Communication, and chapter 9: Perception and Attribution. When I first began as an engineer with my company, I worked under a manager who was the perfect example of one who lacked interpersonal communication skills. In my shared experience, I will call the manager â€Å"Bob†. In Bob’s case, I am not sure if the term â€Å"lacking† can even describe my ex-manager situation. After being around him, and seeing the way that he acts within the workplace; I came to a conclusion that he was mentally disable, or simply rude. Reading the text, â€Å"The Wrong Professional Attitude† gives me more insight on how Bob seems to be one of those â€Å"smart† people whose communicating style is a result of years of conditioning (Osland, 2007, p. 189). This can also be related to a person who thinks they are just smarter than everyone, and you are not able to get anything across to them, even if they are wrong. Talking to some of the other employees within the workplace, they said they noticed the same actions from Bob. Westward Expansion During The 1800 S - 1577 Words

Westward expansion during the 1800’s became the focus of American idealism. Initially, the desire and then the ability to reach the Pacific were paramount. Hawaii is a group of islands in the Central Pacific. Today, tourists from all around the world are attracted to the islands for its tropical weather, its beaches, and for relaxing vacations. In the late 1800’s, the United States was very interested in Hawaii, but for drastically different reasons. It was not attracted to Hawaii because of its potential tourist attractions, but it was interested in the strategic location of Hawaii, using the islands as a foothold to cross the Pacific. The US was afraid that European Countries would seize Hawaii, making America more vulnerable. The United States annexed Hawaii due to a belief in Romantic Nationalism, and to secure its strategic location in the Pacific making it less vulnerable to European countries so that their desire for more land would be fulfilled. The desire for the Hawaiian Islands stemmed from an eagerness to keep foreign countries out of the Northern Pacific. There was always the possibility that Hawaii would be annexed or taken control of by a European country, making the United States more vulnerable. If an opposing country were at war with the US, the opposing country would have easy access to the west coast of the US through Hawaii. For most of the 1800s, political figures were worried that Hawaii would be annexed or be colonized by a European country.Show MoreRelatedThe Expansion of America and The Homestead Act of 18621180 Words   |  5 Pagesthe 1840’s America was becoming a world power to be reckoned with. Feeling of Right and Wrong in Susan Collins Book The...

In Susan Collins the Hunger Games there is a very compelling feeling of right and wrong, as children compete in the hunger games for their lives. At one point in the past there was a rebellion that caused a rebellion to occur and as a lesson to the districts. Two children from every district must battle against each other and only one can survive. These children are forced to kill each other in gruesome ways in front of millions of people for entertainment. Morality is defined as beliefs about what right behavior is and what wrong behavior is. The degree to which something is right and good: the moral goodness or badness of something (Merriam-Webster, 2014). The book Hunger Games makes it clear that the character President Snow made the hunger games as a form of punishment for the uprising that once happened. There is a man by the name of Dr.Ewing who† considers both the retributive theory and the deterrent theory on the subject whilst remaining commendably unprejudiced.
